Building Maintenance Worker

DESCRIPTION This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for independently
performing a variety of mechanical and other building maintenance tasks or for serving
as an assistant to a journeyman tradesman. In either case, although a working
knowledge of one or more trades is usual, a maintenance worker does not utilize the
more skilled journeyman techniques for any considerable portion of his time. The work
requires physical endurance, and willingness to perform routine and often strenuous
tasks under various work conditions. General instructions are received and work is
performed under immediate or general supervision depending upon the nature of the
task.

DUTIES
Participates in snow removal activities and sanding of icy roads;
Assists in the upkeep of grounds by mowing lawns and athletic fields, trimming
shrubbery, and caring for flower beds;
Performs general building and grounds maintenance and housekeeping duties; Serves as
general handyman performing a variety of semi-skilled duties;
Performs semi-skilled work in masonry, carpentry, electrical and painting operations;
Helps to install and repair wiring systems and electric fixtures and equipment; Repairs
windows, doors, floors, walls and other parts of buildings;
Does interior and exterior painting where quantity rather than fine quality of work
performed is the principal object;
Helps to install and repair general plumbing equipment, such as sinks and baths; Assists
in cleaning and repairing boilers, pumps, heaters, pipe lines, valves and traps;
Mixes plaster and concrete and assists in laying brick, plastering walls, finishing concrete
work, etc.;
Operates air compressors and other motorized equipment; May calculate cost of labor
reports;
May maintain records of equipment preventative maintenance;
May prepare requisitions for the purchase of materials relating to building/ground and
maintenance operations.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of modern buildings and grounds maintenance and
repair practices; working knowledge of the practices and techniques of one or more of
the standard trades; mechanical aptitude, industry; dependability; manual dexterity.
Willingness and ability to perform routine heavy manual work; ability to work outdoors
in all types of weather conditions or perform routine cleaning activities efficiently and
effectively; ability to lift heavy weights; physical endurance; reliability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(A)Possession of Associate’s Degree in construction, engineering technology, or a closely
related field; OR


(B)Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND
two (2) years of experience in custodial, building maintenance, or grounds maintenance
activities; OR


(C)Three (3) years of experience in custodial, building maintenance, or grounds
maintenance activities.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Certain assignments made to employees in this class will
require access to transportation to meet field work requirements in a timely and
efficient manner. NYS Driver’s License required.

Substitute Bus Drivers* / Attendants

The Transportation Department has current and immediate openings for Substitute Bus Driver and Attendants. A Civil Service application, fingerprint clearance and a high school diploma or GED are required. Drivers: Possession of or the ability to obtain a Clean Commercial License B, PS and a satisfactory driving record is required.

Wages:  Paid training up to 40 hours. Substitute starting rate of $19. Substantial increase in rate after 300 hours and then again at 100 hours of logged driving with the district.  Possibility of moving into a full-time bus driver position. Full-time driver pay rate starts at $25+/hour. Benefits available with a full-time placement.

School bus drivers are subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and return-to-duty testing for alcohol and controlled substances as required by Board Policy and US Department of Transportation regulations.

* There is potential to develop into a permanent bus driver.

Substitute Teachers

The Waterville Central School District serves a rural community approximately 15 minutes south of Utica, New York. The Waterville CSD consists of approximately 800 students in grades K-12 and is seeking outstanding candidates to serve as Substitutes for Teaching in all areas.

Food Service Workers

Continuous recruitment for part time, daily, and substitute openings available. This is routine work involving assistance in the preparation and service of food, and in the cleaning of kitchen equipment in operation of the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs. 

  • School schedule; no weekends, evenings, or snow days
  • Must enjoy working with students in a busy kitchen environment
