Dear Waterville CSD Families, Staff, and Students,
After a long stretch of cold and rainy weather, we are thrilled the temperatures are forecasted to reach the 90s tomorrow. I wanted to take the opportunity to inform you of the proactive steps our district is taking to ensure the health, safety, and comfort of all students and staff.
In alignment with new New York State legislation and our district’s Draft Extreme Heat and Maximum Temperature Policy, Waterville CSD has developed specific protocols to respond to elevated indoor temperatures.
Please note:
The heat plan applies only to Memorial Park School (MPS). The Jr./Sr. High School is cooled by geothermal wells, so indoor conditions there will remain comfortable for students and staff.
The plan for MPS is as follows:
- We will closely monitor indoor temperatures in all instructional and support spaces throughout the day.
- If classroom temperatures reach 82°F, we will:
- Use fans and existing HVAC units to improve airflow
- Lower blinds and reduce interior heat sources
- Provide access to cold drinking water and encourage frequent hydration
- Offer rest breaks as needed
- Relocate students and staff to cooler areas when feasible
- Use fans and existing HVAC units to improve airflow
- If temperatures rise to 88°F, affected rooms will not be used, and students and staff will be moved to designated “cool zones” in the building.
- If suitable alternate spaces are unavailable, the building principal will notify the Superintendent.
- Depending on building conditions, the Superintendent may authorize early dismissal or temporary remote instruction to prioritize safety.
- If suitable alternate spaces are unavailable, the building principal will notify the Superintendent.
We’re pleased to share that thanks to community support and the recent approval of our capital project, new HVAC systems will be installed at MPS —greatly improving building comfort in future years.
We are committed to taking all necessary steps to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. Any updates regarding schedule changes will be communicated promptly.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we respond to this period of extreme heat.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jennifer Spring
Superintendent of Schools
