Waterville FFA students made their mark at the State Fair this year by earning second place in the New York State FFA Agronomy Career Development Event (CDE), held Friday, Aug. 22 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

The team included Heidi Pryputniewicz, Brooke Pryputniewicz, Hailey Keith, and Jaelyn Northrop—demonstrated exceptional agronomic knowledge and teamwork throughout the competition. Heidi Pryputniewicz led the way as the high individual overall, while Brooke Pryputniewicz earned an impressive fourth place individual finish.
The Agronomy CDE challenges students to apply their understanding of crop science and agricultural systems. Participants were tested on their ability to evaluate crop quality, identify weeds, crop plants, seeds, soils, insects, plant diseases, and nutrient deficiencies, and analyze real-world agronomic scenarios through a collaborative team activity.
During the team portion of the event, Waterville’s FFA members developed a comprehensive plan addressing a simulated agronomy situation—showcasing their ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply classroom knowledge to practical challenges.
“This team’s performance reflects their dedication, preparation, and passion for agriculture,” said Cindy Gallagher, Waterville Agricultural Science Teacher and FFA Advisor. “We’re incredibly proud of their success and the way they represented Waterville in a statewide competition.”
Congratulations to these rising leaders in agriculture for their hard work and well-earned recognition.
