Waterville seniors showcase civic leadership through Capstone Projects

Waterville Central School District seniors “sealed” the deal on civic engagement with the completion of their Capstone Projects.

Seniors earning the prestigious New York State Seal of Civic Readiness recently gathered to present their Capstone Projects, demonstrating their commitment to civic knowledge, participation, and leadership.

The Seal of Civic Readiness is a formal recognition of students who have developed essential civic skills, mindsets, and experiences throughout their secondary education. This distinction signifies a deep understanding of government, law, history, economics, and civic responsibility while also highlighting meaningful participation in real-world civic experiences.

“This honor is more than an academic distinction,” said Holly McNamara, Waterville Jr./Sr. High School social studies teacher. “It represents a commitment to civic engagement, public service, and lifelong participation in our democracy.”

Projects presented:

  • Abigail Dapson – Why Volunteer Firefighters Are Important
  • Allyson Ford, Olivia Ford, Quinnlan Mayne – Should Whole & 2% Milk Be Included in School Meals?
  • McKenna Furner, Nathan Jones, Cooper Patterson, Edmond Yang – Could U.S. Agriculture Survive Without Immigrant Labor?
  • Kaylin King, Cory Murtaugh – Bumps & Babies Teen Parent Support Group

“The Seal of Civic Readiness has given me the chance to explore important issues and make a meaningful impact,” said Dapson. “This project helped me understand real-world challenges and the vital role of volunteer firefighters in keeping communities safe.”

The event was held on May 29 and provided an opportunity for students to share their research and engage with the community on important civic issues.

The seniors who also earned the Seal but did not present at the showcase were Isaac Nemo, Dante Ruia, and Magnolia Schroer.
