Waterville Board of Education Approves New Contract with Waterville Teachers’ Association

Health Care Contribution Concessions and Creation of Teacher Leader Positions and Teacher Collaboration Part of the Deal


A new five-year contract extending to June 30, 2025, between the district and the Waterville Teachers’ Association (WTA) is formally in place following the board’s approval Thursday evening, June 23, 2022. The board voted 6-0 in favor. The WTA overwhelmingly ratified the contract on Thursday, with 100 percent of the membership voting in favor of the new agreement, which is retroactive to July 1, 2020, and runs through June 30, 2025.


Board President, Stephen Stanton, said, “We are extremely pleased to have come to this agreement, which provides a competitive salary structure while also maintaining fiscal integrity for the school district and its taxpayers.”


The average salary increase during the five-year period is 4.1%. “With the current shortage of teachers, this increase will allow the district to be more competitive regionally to attract and retain our highly qualified teachers. During the last few years, there has been a lot of talk in the community about teacher turnover. I believe this will help to address that,” Dr. Spring, Superintendent, said.


The contribution toward healthcare for teachers will increase 3 percentage points over the span of the contract.  


The agreement also includes the establishment of teacher leader positions for specified grade levels and content areas to facilitate continuous improvement in curriculum, instruction and assessment. Dr. Spring added, “It is exciting the new agreement also focuses on improving teaching and learning through the establishment of teacher leader positions and by allowing time for teacher collaboration.” 


Jeff Lenard, WTA President said, “I am very pleased we were able to accomplish this agreement. This is a positive move and demonstrates the district’s value and commitment to its teachers.”
