Waterville Students Earn Top Honors in 2026 Helen and Leon Sperling Holocaust Education Essay Contest

Several Waterville Jr./Sr. High School students recently showcased their dedication to preserving history through an essay contest focused on the Holocaust.

The students competed against peers from across the Mohawk Valley in the annual Helen and Leon Sperling Holocaust Education Essay Contest. The contest is an initiative honoring the legacy of Helen Sperling, a Holocaust survivor who dedicated her life to educating students about history and standing against injustice.

The contest was open to students in grades six through 12 and encouraged thoughtful reflection on the Holocaust’s lessons, ensuring its impact continues for generations. Waterville students earned all three of the top spots, with Hailey Keith and Jaelyn Northrop earning first place, AlyssaLee Lloyd taking second and Hayden Rockwell in third.

The students were formally recognized during the annual Helen and Leon Sperling Holocaust Memorial Lecture at the Jewish Community Center in Utica.

“These students have reflected on the lessons of the Holocaust, ensuring that its history and meaning live on, said Holly McNamara, social studies teacher at Waterville Jr./Sr. High School. “Their achievements not only reflect their academic excellence but also their dedication to raising awareness about one of history’s most profound tragedies.”
