Waterville Jr./Sr. High School Hosts U.S. Rep. John Mannion for Engaging Student Visit
“Having Congressman Mannion speak with our students is an invaluable experience,” said Mrs. Allen. “It provides them with a firsthand understanding of the intersection between education and real-world leadership, showing them how their voices and actions can influence change.”
As a former teacher, New York State Senator, and parent, Mannion brings a wealth of knowledge about both state and federal laws to his work in Congress. He currently serves on two key committees—Education and Agriculture—where he advocates for legislative changes to address urgent issues impacting both fields.
One of the topics Mannion discussed was the growing concern around cell phone use in schools. He voiced his support for policies that limit cell phone usage, emphasizing concerns about overstimulation, the impact of algorithm-driven content, and the role it plays in the mental health challenges faced by students today.
“I was surprised by Congressman Mannion’s kind-hearted nature and his optimistic outlook,” said Waterville senior Eliza Stiffler. “His approach to leadership is truly inspiring.”
